Arts and Culture in the MAC spotlight

18th April 2019

Arts and culture in the spotlight at MAC Question Time

Where now for arts and culture in Belfast?

Arts & Culture took centre stage at the MAC last night, Wednesday 17th April as candidates for the forthcoming election to Belfast City Council faced a special MAC Question Time event. ‘Reaching our potential: Where now for Arts and Culture in Belfast?’

Journalist and presenter Declan Lawn chaired the session with panellists from DUP, UUP, SDLP, Alliance and Green Party in place to answer questions. This was the latest MAC QT event, organised in partnership with Public Affairs and Communications firm, MW Advocate. Previous MAC QT events have looked at health & wellbeing, the economy and mental health.

Anne McReynolds, Chief Executive of the MAC, said "As we prepare to go to the polls to elect the councillors who will be at the helm of our city for the next few years, this special MAC Election Question Time event was a chance to hear directly from political parties about their priorities for the arts sector.

"At the MAC we know about the difficulties faced by the sector, and we work with so many artists, organisations and community groups right across the city who are deeply passionate about improving the city’s cultural offering to put us on a par with some of the world’s most vibrant destinations and all the positive associated benefits that brings. This event gave these groups and members of the public the chance to put their own questions to politicians who are asking for support on 2 May.”

Brendan Mulgrew, Managing Partner, MW Advocate, added "Local government elections give us the opportunity to connect with the people who will be making decisions on how our rates will be spent in the coming years. We are delighted to be part of an event which gives the arts sector in Belfast the chance to speak directly with candidates and highlight the important role that they play in our city.”
