Give the gift of Belfast this Christmas

11th December 2014

Recession fails to hamper growth of Sawers

Sweet chilli jams, smoky apricot chutney and ginger dunkers - these were just some of the culinary delights on offer today as the Lord Mayor of Belfast Cllr Nichola Mallon officially opened Sawers’ new Hamper Shop on College Street in the city.

The independent retailer has seen substantial growth since it was established in 1897, allowing it to expand and relocate to a larger premises on the same street. The added boost of the Christmas shopping period and the growing popularity of their specialist gifts and hampers mean that Sawers has now opened a second shop to meet demand. The company, just off Castle Street, employs 14 people and stocks artisan products from local, national and international stockists.

To help launch the new shop Proprietor and Manager Kieran Sloan presented the first ever ‘Belfast Hamper’ to Lord Mayor Cllr Nichola Mallon. The hamper is the first of its kind comprised solely of items from local producers and is tipped to be Sawers’ biggest seller this year. It includes preserves, chutneys, ground coffee and tea all made in Belfast.

Speaking at the opening Kieran said: "We are delighted to be able to open our Hamper Shop which supports our growth over Christmas. We stock quality local products from across Ireland, as well as some of the world’s finest delicacies. This is why more and more people are choosing Sawers for their Christmas gifts and groceries. Our Belfast Hamper is a showcase of some of our own best products and we’re delighted to launch it this year. Many quality food producers are to be found in the city and we hope people from at home and abroad can enjoy these tastes this Christmas.”

Lord Mayor Cllr Nicola Mallon said: "Sawers is one of Belfast’s best known independent stores and I am delighted to help open the Hamper Shop. The Belfast Hamper reflects everything that is great about the city - variety, quality and good taste! I am honoured to have have been given the first one and will donate it to the Stroke Association to help them with their Christmas fundraising appeal.”

Sawers and the specialist hamper store will be open Monday-Saturday 9am-6pm and Sunday 1-5pm.
