New homes handover at Hopewell Crescent

27th July 2022

Radius Housing completes construction of 18 new homes in Shankill area

Eighteen new homes at Hopewell Crescent in the Shankill area have been completed and handed over to tenants by Radius Housing. The new homes are part of the Building Successful Communities Programme, which is a housing-led regeneration project led by the Department for Communities (DfC). Hopewell Crescent represents a £3m investment.

The homes were developed on a vacant site, which had previously been owned by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive. As part of the Building Successful Communities Programme, Radius Housing took forward the scheme as a housing-led regeneration project to act as a catalyst for change in one of six pilot areas characterised by significant social and economic deprivation. Construction of the 14 houses and 4 apartments was led by the contractor MJ McBride and work commenced in August 2020.

Radius Housing is one of the leading housing developers in Northern Ireland, constructing 300 new homes each year, and managing more than 13,000 social homes. This project was funded by Radius and Department for Communities, and is the latest project to be completed in Belfast by Radius, who are also developing 244 new homes at Blacks Gate.

Speaking as the keys were handed over on the final home, John McLean, Chief Executive at Radius Housing, said "At Radius we put a lot of value in the role of housing in regeneration, and we have seen how the development of quality social and affordable housing can be a catalyst for positive change. That is why we were keen to lead on the housing element of the Building Successful Communities Programme for the Hopewell Crescent area of the Shankill. These 18 houses are not just homes for the new tenants, who we hope will be very happy here; they are also part of a much wider community improvement programme.”

"We are delighted at the quality and finish of the homes, and it has been a great experience to work with MJ McBride, and the wider community in developing and delivering this project.”

Communities Minister Hargey said: "A key priority for me and my Department is to provide access to high quality, affordable accommodation appropriate to individual need. This project is an example of a new social housing scheme with a well-planned mix of homes catering for a wide range of needs. I commend all involved in completing the work and wish the residents well as they begin to enjoy their news homes.”

Among the new tenants who moved into Hopewell Crescent was Naomi McComb, who said "I have been saving as much money as possible to invest into a social housing property which my family can turn into a home. Today that dream was made true when Radius Housing provided the keys to a new build 3 bedroom house at Hopewell Crescent.”
