World Health Organzation Healthy Cities Conference - call for abstracts

‘Changing cities to change the world’
Celebrating 30 years of the Healthy Cities movement


Submission Deadline: Friday 27 April

The 2018 World Health Organization International Healthy Cities Conference takes place in Belfast in October. 

The call for abstracts refers to papers submitted by delegates for the Learning through Practice sessions and poster sessions during the 4 days of the conference.

We are inviting abstracts on the 6 main themes of the conference:

People: a human focus to societal development that prioritizes investment in people to improve equity and inclusion through enhanced empowerment.

Place: the social, physical and cultural environments that align to create a place that is actively inclusive, and that facilitates the pursuit of health and well-being for all.

Participation: ensuring the participation of all individuals and communities in the decisions that affect them and the places they live, work, love and play.

Prosperity: enhanced community prosperity and strengthened assets through values-based governance of common goods and services.

Planet: ensuring that the protection of the planet is at the heart of all city policies, both internal and external.

Peace: promoting peace through inclusive societies that focus on places, participation, prosperity and the planet, while putting people at the centre of all policies and actions.

Preference will be given to those papers that address the conference themes and which illustrate 3 or more of the following:

  • Strategic approaches
  • Comprehensive and systematic approaches
  • Intersectoral approaches
  • Life course approaches
  • Community-based initiatives
  • Innovative solutions
  • Work that has been evaluated & lessons learnt
  • Actions with concrete goals and outcomes


Each abstract must be submitted electronically, clearly and concisely in English. All abstracts will be reviewed by members of the Scientific Committee and authors informed of the results by Monday 4 June.

Authors whose abstracts are selected will be required to submit their full papers before the Conference. Specifications for preparing full papers will be sent to successful applicants.

All selected abstracts will be published in the final programme and an electronic book of abstracts.
